Craig Deats

Craig Deats has been practicing law for over 30 years in the areas of labor and employment law. After graduating with honors from the University of Texas Law School in 1978, he began practicing law as an in-house attorney for the National Treasury Employees Union, becoming the Supervising Attorney in its Austin Office in 1983. He entered private practice in 1984, and became a partner in his first law firm a year later in 1985. He has continued in the private practice of law in Austin since that time, and has extensive trial and appellate experience in both the state and federal courts. In 2005, his firm of Deats & Levy merged with the firm of Wiseman, Durst & Owen, creating the firm of Deats, Durst, Owen & Levy, P.L.L.C.

Since 1989, Craig has been continuously board certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in the field of Labor & Employment Law. He has also served for a period both as a member of the State Bar of Texas Labor & Employment Law Advisory Committee, and as a Council member and Chair of the SBOT’s Labor & Employment Law Section. He has for many years been selected by his peers to be listed in “Best Lawyers in America” (Woodward/White Inc., publishers, 1993 -2009) and “Texas Super Lawyers” in the area of Labor & Employment Law (Thomson Reuters publishers, 2003-2017). Craig is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars on various labor and employment topics. He currently serves as General Counsel for the Texas State Association of Fire Fighters.

Craig married his wife, Lydia, in 1977. They have two grown children, Caleb and Caroline, born in 1983 and 1986. Craig is a member of the Texas Bar Foundation.
